Timeless advice: Wear Sunscreen
UV radiation is a proven cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Damage from the sun causes premature ageing of the skin as well. The depletion of the ozone layer has increased our risk of sun damage that even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can pass through clouds. Even though some people are not easily sunburned, they are still at risk of acquiring melanoma, the most common kind of skin cancer.
So what are UVA and UVB rays?
Two types of UV light are proven to contribute to the risk for skin cancer:
Ultraviolet A (UVA) has a longer wavelength, and is associated with skin ageing.
Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a shorter wavelength and is associated with skin burning.
UVA radiation enter the skin's deep layers, impairing the immune system's capacity to combat skin cancer while the UVB rays are the ones that burn the skin. The body is put under a lot of stress because it has to heal all of the cells that have been harmed by the sunburn. The severity of the damage is determined by the intensity of UV radiation and the amount of time your skin has been exposed without protection.
Sun exposure is a risk even when you are inside.
What are IRA and HEVL rays?
More recent studies have discovered that High Energy Visible Light (HEVL) and Infrared-A (IRA) wavelengths can potentially cause harm to the skin too. These rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum and can come from less-obvious places such as infrared rays emitted by tv screens, computer screens, blue light from mobile phones, hair dryer, halogen lamps, etc. IRA rays can penetrate even deeper into skin, causing free radicals that further accelerate skin ageing. In people with darker skin, visible light can also cause increased pigmentation.
Because we’re on our devices more than ever and even if you aren’t going outside much these days, it’s still important to wear sunscreen indoors as damaging rays can still penetrate through your windows and by blue light emitted by electronic devices. Much like UV rays from the sun, this type of light can have damaging effects on our skin's health.
When it comes to safeguarding your skin, opt for broad-spectrum sunscreens with higher SPF to do the optimal job at protecting your skin against the 4 types of harmful radiations - that's SPF 50+.
